As the weather gets warmer, we sometimes feel like we are under more and more pressure to get into the healthiest version of ourselves as quickly as possible. Spring is the time to get out and get active, and here are a few healthy tips to help us accomplish our goals as summer approaches.
Detox
The first step to getting yourself ready for the active, warm-weather season is to detox your body from all of the toxins that you’ve been exposed to. True Cellular Detox™ is one of my top 5 strategies for your best health and your best self, which you can read more about here. You may be unnecessarily suffering from exposure to heavy metals, mold, or hidden infections, which must be cleared out starting at the cellular level. We go into ketosis at the beginning of summer and make the dietary shift, so shifting your diet out of or into ketosis, starting on a detox protocol, and starting the Cellular Healing Diet is something that, if you haven’t began already, We recommend as step 1.
Hydrate
Proper hydration is key, as this is still the time of the year when our bodies and the air around us lack moisture and we become more active. Always choose mineral water, and if you’re traveling, bring a reusable BPA-free water bottle, filled with pure water to avoid polycarbonate, the plastic used in most bottled water, which can cause cancer, hormone dysregulation, and more. Use stainless steel or glass containers not only for your beverages, but for your food as well!
Train
When the sun comes out, we come outside for more activities. Being surrounded by fresh air is important to our overall health and well being, but we also need to stay active on the days where the weather can be less than ideal. Burst training, aka High Interval Intensity Training, is easy to implement and more effective for fat burning than the hours and hours you may feel you need to spend in the gym. It can be done anywhere, and doesn’t require long hours as it is more about the short, intense “bursts” and less about the daily grind. Remember to remain active on recovery days, especially as the traveling season begins.
Rest
Quality sleep is important for optimal health, just as much as training and proper diet. If you’re having trouble sleeping, consider taking magnesium, melatonin, Sentra PM or a binding agent before bed. We highly recommend incorporating meditation or deep breathing into your nighttime routine and blocking out all light. This includes not using and removing electronics from your sleep space.
Good Fats
The world is coming around to the fact that not all fat makes your fat. Good fats are one of the most essential but most lacking nutrients from our diets, and are essential for getting back into your “summer body” by enhancing weight-loss, providing MCTs, energy, and helping our body to absorb essential nutrients from our diets. Good fats, like coconut oil, have been shown to help with losing abdominal fat, increase thyroid function and regulation of blood sugar, and keeping us out of our “afternoon slump”.
Bonus! Fasting
Intermittent fasting keeps your body and mind in sync, burns fat, improves energy and stamina, and decreases food cravings and hunger. The Hunza people, some of the longest living and most healthy people on the planet, have what was called a “starving spring,” a time in which they would fast due to the low reserves of crops during the end of the winter months. A fast is one of the best things to do – whether you’re using water, whey, or stock. Stay tuned for new information to come on water fasting!
We’ve said before that intermittent fasting is the single most powerful thing We do on a daily basis to increase our health. Skipping breakfast and later eating a small, light snack high in fat and protein really allows my body to spring forward and makes a full, nutrient rich dinner even more satisfying. Fasting is a great bonus practice, especially as you begin to travel more, when restaurant options can limit you.
Whether traveling, staying in, or becoming more active, your body should always be your top priority. Following these healthy tips as guidelines will not only positively impact your overall health and body, but will dramatically lower your risk of developing inflammatory, chronic disease.
